CHIPKEY FAQS:

Q. What is a ChipKey?

A. ChipKeys or anti-theft auto keys contain a computer “transponder” chip in the head of the key programmed to the vehicle’s security system. Duplicate keys for your vehicle require programming this matching code in order to operate the vehicle. Auto manufacturers began phasing these keys into production vehicles starting in 1995. The vehicles anti-theft computer and the programmed chipkey helped to curb auto theft and reduce insurance premiums.

Q. Why do I need a spare ChipKey?

A. This new technology requires that the vehicle key not only unlocks the doors and words in the ignition, but must have the same matching code to the vehicle’s anti-theft computer. In the event that your keys are lost or broken and you don’t have a spare set, the vehicle will need to to be towed to the dealership to reprogram your vehicle’s computer, which can be very costly.

Q. Why does the ChipKey cost more than a plastic-head auto key?

A. The key is no longer a key. It is a high-tech device that communicates electronically with the vehicle’s engine computer with a unique security code. The majority of newer vehicles use smart keys that contain special-coded computer chips. The new anti-theft computer technology is a very expensive component that was designed to protect against vehicle theft. The ChipKey must be programmed to work with a particular vehicle. Programming these keys require specialized diagnostic equipment operated by a trained technician.

Q. Will a non-ChipKey operate my vehicle?

A. No, a key can be cut to open the door or trunk but unless it contains a programmed chip with the matching code, the vehicle will not operate.

Q. How do I know if my vehicle needs a ChipKey?

A. A simple test with a ChipKey detector will determine if you need to purchase a spare chipkey. Ask your key technician for a FREE chipkey test to check your key right now.

Q. How many ChipKeys do I need?

A. The real answer is more than one. Should you misplace or lose all of your vehicle’s keys, this will cost you considerable time and money. We recommend 3 keys per vehicle, just in case.
